Mites Mites and ticks, collectively known as the Acari, constitute the second most diverse group of animals on the planet today and are of interest to humans for a variety of reasons. They directly affect our well being as parasites, vectors of disease, and producers of allergens. They are responsible for millions of dollars worth of economic losses each year as a result of infestations of our agricultural systems.

The acari are ubiquitous. They are members of every major ecosystem on earth, and their specific habitats run the gamut from the familiar to the truly bizarre. From our backyards to the geothermal springs of the Yellowstone caldera and from the subcutaneous tissue of turtles to our very own hair follicles, mites carry out a nearly invisible existence.

While awareness of the acari dates back to ancient Egypt (1550 BC) and was continually demonstrated throughout the writings of the major Greek scholars, the science of acarology originated in 18th century Europe. Linnaeus described the first mite, Acarus siro, in 1758, thus laying the groundwork for the field of systematic acarology. Today, there are over 48,000 described species of mites and ticks worldwide while current estimates place total diversity at over a half-million species.

Bird Mite Infestation

Who... people with a bird's nest near the home, apartment dwellers with nesting pigeons, farmers who raise chickens, people who obtain used furniture, carpet, clothing, etc, that has been infested. This can also include guests of hotels, office workers et al., when the buildings are inhabited by nesting birds.

What... parasitic infestation from bird mites too small to be easily seen without magnification. Symptoms include pinprick bites, small reddened bumps, often intense itching with or without lesions, and a crawling sensation anywhere on the body; with increased activity at night. The intense itching and irritation on the skin is due to the mite's saliva. When a large area is covered with bites it will resemble a rash in appearance, and it is often mistaken for scabies.

Where... more commonly infest bedrooms and bathrooms, but will quickly infest the whole house. Mites will infest carpeting, bedding, upholstered furniture, clothing, etc. They hide in cracks, crevices and darkened areas in the home when not active. They tend to congregate where humans routinely are; such as near the computer, in automobiles, etc.

When... bird mites are most active from dusk till dawn, but can be active at other times, especially when disturbed. Bird mites are very disruptive to our normal sleep pattern, causing many nights of lost sleep. Mites are less active from about noon to 6 PM, and they are less active on hot, dry, sunny days. They tend to be more active on damp, humid, overcast days. Increased activity every seven days or so, when the new mites will mature. Bird mite populations tend to peak in the late spring and summer, corresponding to increasing temperature and humidity levels.

Why... bird mites are parasites they feed on living organisms; the female mite needs blood to reproduce. They are attracted to mammals by receptors for moisture, heat and CO2. They are aggressive and they often bite humans when their original food source has gone; as when the young birds leave the nest. They can quickly multiply into thousands, leaving the afflicted person with the feeling of being overwhelmed. Once a home is heavily infested, they are nearly impossible to fully eradicate.

Mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, the two-spotted spider mite, is the most well know tetranychid species in the world. It can produce extensive damage to host plants. Colonies are usually found on the underside of leaves. However, when population densities are high, they are found on both sides of leaves and produce abundant webbing to which the eggs, larvae, nymphs and adults The average life-cycle of females of this species spans about 30 days. During this period, a female will produce and deposit approximately 100 eggs. However, under stressful conditions, egg counts of over 200 per female have been reported (The eggs have a smooth, shiny surface that is off-white in color. This species has been reported to feed on more than 900 different plant species

Mite Broad mites tarsonemidae

The family Tarsonemidae includes saprophagous (feed on decaying material), phytophagous, fungivorous and insectivorous mite species. The family's diversity is centered in tropical and subtropical regions. Most tarsonemid mites are very small, pale in color, often with black or greenish spotting. Due to their rapid dispersal ability, field recognition, collection and control of these mites is sometimes difficult.

Mite Yellow mites tydeidae


Most of the species in the family Tydeidae are considered fungivores or predators, however, a few are known to be facultatively phytophagous. These mites are oval in shape, fast moving, and can be found both singly or in congregations. Their chelicerae (mouthparts) are highly modified into slender stylets which are used to pierce fungal bodies, other microorganisms, and/or plant tissue
